Penhill Dark Monarch
A giant informal decorative bred by Walter H. Maritz in South Africa and introduced in 2003. The blooms are enormous and the color is hard to pin down: the registry calls it purple and yellow, while growers see raspberry fading to plum. Expect a dark blend that changes as each flower opens and ages. It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Growing Notes
Plants reach 48–60 inches, so set a sturdy stake at planting. Growers report unusually strong stems for a bloom this size and steady flowering into fall. Disbud for the largest blooms. The color shifts through the season — lovely in the garden, a planning challenge for event work that needs a repeatable shade.
